On this two day, one night or three day, two night trip you ride the train from Christchurch to Kaikoura then bus from Kaikoura to Hanmer Springs and from Hanmer Springs to Christchurch - or go the other way round. Kaikoura is a small town rich in Maori legend and history. It boasts a unique and impressive combination of ocean and alpine scenery and is famous for its resident sperm whales which can be seen off the coast all year round. Travel by scenic rail and enjoy exploring the town, visiting the museum with its relics of the whaling stations of the past and lunch at one of the many cafes before returning to Christchurch.
