ATS113

This tour collects you from your accommodation at 11am and takes you around the beauty and diversity of the Waipara Valley in the Hurunui district. Waipara is on the same latitude as the South of France and its limestone soils and unique microclimate make conditions ideal for grape growing and wine making. The first vineyards were planted in 1977 and since then the region's winemakers have been establishing themselves as producers of some of New Zealand's finest chardonnay, riesling and pinot noir wines. Free tastings are offered at the wineries visited and a lunch platter is provided. Your tour will include a selection of well known vineyards, which may vary from day to day:

Canterbury House is set amongst beautiful gardens with a backdrop of rolling hills. The first grapes were planted in 1994 and have been added to since. Canterbury House has won many medals in national and international competitions and produces sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, riesling, pinot gris, method traditionale, merlot and pinot noir.

Fiddlers Green entranceway is lined by olive trees and the vineyard features 23 hectares planted in grapes adjoining the Waipara River. They can also claim many national and international awards and produce riesling, sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and chardonnay wines.

Pegasus Bay Vineyard is planted on a base of stones which retain heat and this enables the full ripening of grape varieties not normally successful so far south, such as cabernet sauvignon/merlot. In a decade the winery has consistently made top wines, often in adventurous styles. Wines produced are riesling, chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet/merlot, sauvignon blanc, semillon sauvignon.

Waipara Springs is a boutique vineyard which began in 1984 with the planting of four hectares of chardonnay vines. It now has over 26 hectares of grapes in production. The wines have all been produced on the property and enjoyed both in New Zealand and internationally since the winery opened in 1990. Wines produced are riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon.

If time permits the tour also visits Athena Olive Grove where you are invited to sample their products. Nestled amongst the sundrenched vineyards of the Waipara Valley, Athena produced Canterbury's first cold pressed, extra virgin olive oil.

You will be delivered back to your accommodation by 5 pm.

Price $95 pp Group and charter bookings available.
